Gutters overflowing in the rain: why it happens and how to fix it

1. Clogged gutters

- Water spills over the front edge along a stretch of gutter, often under trees. From a ladder you see leaves, needles, shingle grit or even plants growing in the trough.

- Scoop out the debris, then flush the gutter with a hose toward the downspout. Most homes need cleaning once or twice a year, more under pines or oaks.
2. Clogged downspout
- How to tell
- Water overflows near the downspout while little or nothing comes out the bottom, and the gutter stays full after the rain stops.
- What fixes it
- Clear the top opening, then run a hose down it at full pressure or feed a plumber's snake up from the bottom. If it drains into a buried pipe that's blocked, a pro can clear or replace it.
3. Sagging gutter or wrong pitch
- How to tell
- Water stands in the gutter a day after rain, or spills at one low spot away from the downspout. Hangers are loose, bent or pulling out of the fascia board.
- What fixes it
- Replace loose spikes with screw-in hidden hangers about every 2 feet, and re-pitch the run so it falls about 1/4 to 1/2 inch every 10 feet toward the downspout. Rotted fascia has to be replaced first.
4. Undersized gutters or a roof valley
- How to tell
- The gutters are clean and pitched right but still overflow in heavy rain, usually at a corner where a roof valley dumps water. Water shoots over the gutter instead of into it.
- What fixes it
- Add a valley splash guard at the corner, add a downspout, or upsize from 5-inch to 6-inch gutters and from 2x3-inch to 3x4-inch downspouts.
5. Ice in the gutters
- How to tell
- In freezing weather, gutters and downspouts are packed with ice and icicles hang from the edge. Meltwater runs over the front or backs up under the shingles.
- What fixes it
- Don't chip the ice out. Keep downspouts clear and pull snow off the roof edge with a roof rake from the ground. Heat cables are a stopgap. Repeated ice usually traces back to attic heat, which insulation and air sealing fix.

- 1During a heavy rain, watch from the ground or a window and note where water spills: along a whole run, at one low spot, at a corner, or near the downspout.
- 2Check the bottom of each downspout. If little water comes out while the gutter overflows, the downspout is clogged.
- 3On a single-story house, on a dry, calm day, set a sturdy extension ladder on firm, level ground, about 1 foot out from the wall for every 4 feet of height. Use a standoff so it doesn't rest on the gutter, and keep three points of contact.
